International Trade
The fourth quarter figures showed an increase of 579 million Vatu in Vanuatu's
trade deficit as compared to the fourth quarter of 2000. The trade deficit amounted to
2,995 million Vatu during the fourth quarter 2001 compared to the same period of
2000. Meanwhile, the annual trade deficit rose to 10,340 million vatu,
indicating an increase of 1,647 million vatu.
Imports for home consumption increased from 3,178 million Vatu in the fourth quarter of 2000 to
3,775 million Vatu in the same quarter of 2001, showing an increase of 18.8 percent.
This resulted in an annual increase of 5.4 percent.

Tourism and Migration
Visitor arrivals for the fourth quarter of 2001 were 12,899, a decrease of
14.8 percent over the third quarter of 2001, and 13.5 percent over
the same quarter of the previous year.

Consumer Price Index
The December quarter of 2001 CPI recorded an
increase of 0.3 percent over the September quarter of 2001, and a 2.3
percent over December quarter of 2000. The increase over the September quarter
of 2001 was due to slight in indices for both Port Vila (0.3 percent) and
Luganville (0.4 percent).
