International Trade
The 2001 first quarter figures on trade showed a decrease of 9.6% in trade
deficit compared to December quarter 2000. On an annual basis, Vanuatu's trade
deficit rose rose 11.2% from 1,964 million Vatu first quarter 2000 to 2,184 million Vatu
first quarter 2001.
Total imports increased from 2655 million Vatu in the first quarter of 2000
to 2,787 million Vatu in the first quarter of 2001 while quarterly figures
showed total imports fell 15.9% compared to the December quarter 2000.
Domestic exports for the first quarter 2001 decreased by 20% compared to first quarter 2000. The decrease was heavily influenced by reduced
receipts in copra (down 74.%) and cocoa (down 43.3%). Other commodities
that also contributed to the overall decline in exports for this quarter are timber (down
13.4%) and cowhides (down 40%).
According to the first quarter 2001 report, Australia remains Vanuatu's main trading partner, buying 22.4% of Vanuatu's
total domestic exports , followed by Japan buying
13.5% while New Zealand bought up to 5% of Vanuatu's domestic exports.

Tourism and Migration
Visitor arrivals in March 2001 decreased by 16.1% over the December quarter
2000. The country's political instability
contributed significantly to the low number of arrivals into the country.
There has also been a drop in the number of cruise ship visitors (down 8.9%).

Consumer Price Index
The Vanuatu Consumer Price Index increased by 2.1% over the March quarter
while and annual rate of change stood at 3.1%. The quarter increases were mostly
due to price increases in Vila.
The most significant upward contribution to the movement in the CPI came from
"Housing and Utilities (up 3.8%) and Food (up 1.8%). Less significant
upward contributions came from the clothing and footwear group and household
supplies group. The most significant downward contribution to the March quarter
came from the transport and communication group (down 0.1%) and drinks and
tobacco group (down 0.3%).
