International Trade
The second quarter figures showed an increase of 914 million Vatu in Vanuatu’s
trade deficitą as compared to the second quarter 2000. The trade deficit
amounted to 2,749 million Vatu during the second quarter 2001 compared to 1,835
million Vatu in the same period of 2000.
Imports for Home Consumption increased from 2,790 million Vatu in the second
quarter of 2000 to 3,306 million Vatu in the same quarter of 2001, showing an
increase of 18.5% compared to the second quarter of 2000
The domestic exports during the second quarter of 2001 decreased by 37.9%
compared to the second quarter of 2000. The decrease was mainly attributable to
the decreases in copra (-81.1%) and beef (-51.9%) exports. Timber sawn,
cowhides, and kava have also contributed to this decrease. However, cocoa and
shells exports increased by 150% and 12.5% respectively over the same period.
The distribution of exports by country of destination indicated that Japan
became Vanuatu’s main export destination, buying 27.4% of Vanuatu’s domestic
exports during the second quarter 2001. Australia, European Union, New
Caledonia, New Zealand and South Korea, New Zealand followed respectively with
19.6%, 6.3%, 5.6%, 2.7% and 2%. 36.4% were exported to the remaining countries

Tourism and Migration
Visitor arrivals for the second quarter of 2001 were 12,625,
an increase of 0.7% compared to the first quarter 2001, but a significant
decrease of 16.6% compared to the same quarter of previous year.
Visitors from Australia, which remains the principal market
from which over half the tourists come, decreased by 7.9% over the first quarter
of 2001. Visitors from Europe (6.7%), Other Pacific Countries (3.2%), New
Caledonia (2.8%) and Japan (1.5%) and also contributed to the decrease. However,
visitors from New Zealand and North America showed increases of 70.3% and 33.5%
respectively during the same period.
Visitor arrivals by purpose of visit showed that there were
increases for visitors who came to visit Friends and Relatives (39.1%) and also
for those who came for Business (35.1%), however, visitors who came on holiday
decreased by 4.3% during the second quarter compared to the first quarter, 2001.
Cruise ship visitor arrivals also showed an increase of 6.6% over the first
quarter of 2001 and a decrease of 0.6% over the same quarter of the previous
year.

Consumer Price Index
The June quarter 2001 Consumer Price Index recorded an
increase of 0.8% over the March quarter 2001 and a 4.4% increase over the June
quarter 2000. The increase over the March quarter 2001 was due to increases in
indices for Port Vila (0.7%) and Luganville (0.8%).
The Expenditure groups having greater impact on the increase
over March quarter 2001 were Housing & Utilities (2.0%), Transport &
Communication (1.6%), Clothing & Footwear (1.4%) Food Consumption (0.5%),
Drink & Tobacco (0.4%) and Recreation, Education & Health (0.3%).
However, Household Supplies recorded a decrease of 1.5% over the same period.
The major increases in Housing &
Utilities, Transport & Communication and Food Consumption was due to
increases in rented accommodation (2.6%), Land Transport (12.9 %) and seasonal
items such as fruits and vegetables in Supermarkets (15.4%).
