International Trade
The third quarter figures of 2002 showed a deterioration of 40 million Vatu in
Vanuatu's trade deficit as compared to the same quarter of 2001. The trade
deficit stood at 2,552 million Vatu during the same period of 2001.
Imports for Home Consumption increased from 3,088 million Vatu in third
quarter of 2001 to 3,210 Vatu in the same quarter of 2002, showing an increase
of 4.0%.

Tourism and Migration
.Visitor arrivals for third quarter of 2002 were 14,200 - an increase of 20.9%
over the second quarter of 2002 but a decrease of 6.2% over the same quarter of
the previous year.

Consumer Price Index
.During the September quarter of 2002, the
Consumer Price Index rose 0.2% over the June quarter 2002 and 2.3% over the
September quarter of 2001. These increases were due to increases in commodity
prices in Port Vila and Luganville.
The Expenditure Group having the greater
impact on the increase in the September quarter of 2002 was Food (1.4%). All
other expenditure groups have slightly increased, except Drinks & Tobacco
and Housing & Utilities which fell by 0.5% and 1.6%
respectively.
