International Trade
The first quarter figures of 2002 showed an increase of 138 million Vatu in Vanuatu's
trade deficit as compared to the first quarter of 2001. The trade deficit amounted to
2,158 million Vatu during the first quarter 2002 compared to 2,020 million Vatu
in the same period of 2001. Meanwhile, the annual trade deficit rose to 10,340 million
vatu,
indicating an increase of 1,647 million vatu.

Tourism and Migration
Visitor arrivals for the first quarter of 2002 were 9,668, a decrease of 25.6 percent over the
fourth quarter of 2001, and also a decrease of 14.9 percent over the same quarter of the previous year.

Consumer Price Index
The March quarter of 2002 CPI recorded an
increase of 0.2 percent over the December quarter of 2001, and a 1.2 percent over
March quarter of 2001. These increases were due to increases in commodity prices
for both Port Vila and Luganville.
